How to tackle your "to read" list - and still keep it fun!

I’ve always had stacks of books on my shelves, waiting to be read. Since starting my online book club, Apostrophe S Coffee Chat, my ‘to-read’ list has grown exponentially.

That’s a great problem to have, in my opinion. The only downside to a huge list of books is choosing which ones to read next, and then finding the time to read them. ;)

It can be overwhelming, and since reading is part of my self care, I want to protect that time and keep it as enjoyable as possible. So, I’m going to share how I’ve been approaching my “to-read” list. There is no right or wrong way to do this, I’m simply sharing a method that has worked pretty well for me.

The first thing I had to decide is that it’s ok to not finish reading a book that I don’t like. Not everyone agrees with that, but it has helped me tremendously in really enjoying the books I read.

Here is my method:

  1. List the top 2-3 books I am most looking forward to reading at the moment, either from my own shelves or from the library.

  2. Once I have them, I start with the book I am looking forward to the most, and I read the first 1-2 chapters. If it hooks me right away, I keep going. Yay!

  3. If it doesn’t hook me right away or I have a hard time getting through it, I set it down and pick up the 2nd book on my list. Again, I read the first couple chapters.

  4. I continue doing this a couple times until I find one that I love right away. If I start a book and really dislike it, I return it to the library without reading it, or donate it. My personal opinion is that I’m not going to waste time reading a book I don’t really like. I would much rather move on to one that I love.

There have been quite a few times where I set a book to the side, and pick it back up a few days or weeks later and end up loving it. This is how I keep reading enjoyable - I don’t force myself to read something I don’t love.

That’s pretty much it! How do you tackle your reading list?
